Charming late 17th century copper engraved map, with pleasing full hand color.
Note the very clear outline shape of northern California as an island, separate from the mainland. Also interesting is how Japanese islands at top center is the "Land of Jesso" with an undefined coastline.
Mostly clean & well preserved example, trivial blank margin corner staining & edge toning which visually testifies to the age and patina.
Sheet measures c. 5" x 8" H.
Printed area measures c. 4" x 5 3/4" H.
McLaughlin, Mapping of California as an Island , 82 (this particular map actually over-looked or unmentioned; the cartography & projection is nearly identical to 82 and the various typographical letterpress similarities confirm it is the same map simply printed with varying letterpress around it. That map is described & pictured as #82; Continent Arctique [figure XCIX] , this example being titled Continent Septentionale [figure LXXVI .) and thus clearly preceding their example [figure 76 vs. figure 99] within the same atlas.
