Oceanica Australia hooked Lake Torrens Sandwich Hawaii 1860 Mitchell old mapBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian
Map of Oceanica, Exhibiting its Virious Divisions, Island Groups.
(United States- Australia)
Issued Philadelphia, c.1860 by S.A. Mitchell. An early issue distinguished by the dark rich border, the vivid coloration and the hooked Lake Torrens which soon disappears from later versions.
Interesting antique lithographed map with original hand color. Inset lower right of Sandwich Islands (Hawaii). We note in southern Australia that Lake Torrens is shown with a prominent and totally erroneous hook shape.
Lovely appearance, nice age patina, trivial age toning or insignificant stains, overall the printed area remains clean, well preserved and very attractive.
Sheet measures c. 12 5/8" x 15 1/4".
Engraved area measures c. 10 1/2" x 13 1/4".
