(Old Books, 19th Century Books, Collected Periodicals, Dr. Johnson's- The Rambler, The Guardian, The Adventurer, Lord Lyttleton's Persian Letters,).

Harrison's British Classicks. Major literary works, collected and illustrated.
Published 1785, London for Harrison and Co.
2 volumes. 463, 81 & 358, 366 pages. Text in English. Engraved half titles, total of 30 splendid decorative full page engraved plates throughout. Many/ most of the engravings are by Heath.

Among the wide range of interesting content seen during a brief random browsing are a list of deaths reported in London, March, 1753 listing deaths, including 1 death from being bit by a "mad lap-dog", a death from being "kicked and pulled by the ears, 7 deaths from duels, 12 were "stabbed", etc.

Original (rare) publisher's plain paper covered boards, intended as a temporary sale binding until it was properly leather bound. Most editions of this work were issued without this fine extensive suite of engraved plates.

Set is physically old and shows some clear signs of handling and time, as do all similar bindings of this era. Set is not new or in "new" condition, but is still quite acceptable, especially given the rarity.

Bindings gently age worn, paper spines well chipped, old cloth repair done long ago to one volume to hold detached cover on, former library stamps and pockets, remains overall sound as issued and attractive as an 18th century paper bound set.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting, internally still well preserved, tight, sound. Nice hand made paper used throughout, original wide margins with (untrimmed) deckled edges. These original wide paper margins with deckling are the parts cut away for most books which survive today bound in old leather bindings.

Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this set survives.
