Pocket atlas- geography lesson book- juvenile cartography- instructional books of 18th century.
Principes de Geographie, Absolument necessaires aux Enfants, divises en vingt quatre petites Lecons, door P. Sazerac.
1785, Amsterdam, J. B. Elwe.
Beautiful hand made color printed paper covers, early to book and perhaps as originally issued for sale. Untrimmed example, with four page publishers catalogue price list after the maps (final leaf stuck to rear cover).
Contains five folding world maps at the rear, each with full original hand color:
Universele of Waereld-Kaart...
Nieuwe Generale Kaart van Europa...
Nieuwe Generale Kaart van Asia...
Nieuwe Generale Kaart van Africa...
Nieuwe Generale Kaart van Amerika...
Interestingly, all the maps make mention of Captain Cook in their title
Two maps with neat paper repairs which are easy to forgive or overlook, otherwise fresh, clean maps. Text leaves slightly loosened within wrappers. Despite any age flaws, overall, a splendid if not remarkable survival. Few paper juveniles of this era survive with such pleasing patina, particularly those with large folding plates.
Book measures: 7" H X 4 1/4" W.
Koeman, Atlantees Neerlandici, II, E&L2- [Compleete zak-atlas 1786]. this 1785 imprint date found with Elwes name alone is according to Koeman the earliest date recorded for Elwe in the book trade. Fascinating life story around this minor map publisher.
The maps within this rare juvenile book appear to be (are almost certainly) identical to the same 5 maps issued in the 1786 zak-atlas noted by Koeman above.
