The Royal Gauger, or Gauging Made Perfectly East, as Practiced by the Officers of His Majesty's Revenue of Excise, by Charles Leadbetter.
Published 1776, London for J. & F. Rivington, T. Caslon.
492 [493] pages. Text in English.

A fascinating and comprehensive 18th century book covering all aspects of taxation and calculating relating to goods entering into England. Issued while the American Revolution was going on. Chapter topics include arithmetic, slide rule, geometry, taxation on spirits, wine, beer, casks, candles, cordwood, ship gauging, duties of officers, etc.

Period plain full leather binding, slightly raised bands.

Book is 245 years old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.

Binding gently age worn, joints and covers rubbed and scuffed, leather still supple, remains overall attractive as an object.

Text block paper is gently toned, mostly clean paper, several plates are defective and lacking portions, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique book survives.
