Scotland & Ireland Isles 1860's Johnson large fine map w/ original hand colorBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Johnson's Ireland / Scotland.
Issued New York, c.1863-5 by A.J. Johnson.
Interesting mid-19th century antique engraved and lithographed map with original hand color.
Nice decorative border adds to the visual appeal.
Uncommon Civil War era state, the J & Ward imprint only existed briefly during these years. Two maps originally published separately, then again later separately, only appearing together thus relatively briefly.
In attractive and overall well preserved condition; clean 4" split to bottom centerfold which becomes invisible when the map is laid open flat. Minor light surface age wear and uniform paper toning as typical, overall the maps are clean, well preserved and very interesting. Key locates historical battlefields in both nations as well as the railroad lines then in existence, common roads, etc.
Original fold line as issued.
Sheet measures c. 26" x 18"
Engraved area measures c. 22 1/2" x 16"
Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers , v. 2, p. 443, noting A.J. imprint only appears 1866-on.
