The Solar System
Compiled under the direction of H.C. Russell, Gov. Astronomer (for NSW Australia).
(Celestial model- Planetary - Planets- Sky- Sun- Moon- Orbits-)
Issued 1888, Sydney, Australia
In many ways a remarkable late 19th century folio sheet printed color celestial print. With a unique, little known and historically noteworthy early Australian origin. Also worth note is how few large format color images were printed in Australia in the 19th century, this image being among a relative handful compared with far more numerous Western productions such as Cram, Stieler, Johnston, etc.
Top corners display miniature "Comparison" of relative sizes diagrams. The central large diagram has Sun at center, explanatory text in sky area for Asteroids, Comets & The Sun. Lower 1/3 of image devoted to a relative distance of planetary orbits from the Sun diagram, then further Tides & Eclipses illustrations.
Compiled under the direction of one of the great 19th century scientists produced within Australia, a man worth researching online. In many respects a great man with a towering scientific legacy attesting to his integrity, conduct and diligent pursuit of factual based knowledge. No fake news would have passed by this guy.
As originally issued long ago, an actual antique/ vintage printed sheet of paper more than 100 years old, not a modern copy or reprint of a map.
Sheet remains well preserved, keeping in mind it is not modern or new, so minor flaws to paper unworthy of specific mention are sometimes to be expected. Some light age wear or surface spotting/ soiling, all of which is hopefully visible within the pictures
The paper sheet could show various minor signs of age, but if we are offering it for sale, you can be 100% certain it is entirely worthy of ownership by even the most discerning collector or dealer.
Paper and image remains overall clean & sound. Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price. If the map has a fold-line down the middle, it is original to the map.
Attractive and desirable old vintage antique map entirely worthy of hanging for display.
A cartographic depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era.
Sheet measures c. 16 7/8" x 13 " .
Printed area measures c. 14" x 10"
A picture is worth a thousand words. The pictures are a major part of the item description. Please examine them closely, as what you see is what we will send you.
[note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.].
