World double hemispheres rare 1808 Dublin produced map with original hand colorBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Issued c.1808 Dublin, Ireland. Anonymous engraver.
Charming and undoubtedly scarce/ rare early 19th century engraved map with original hand color. An unusual imprint location for world maps at this time.
Almost primitive qualtiy to the engraving technique, the outline shapes assigned to continents rudimentary, one step above an amateur level of engraving skill. Scientific spheres in the corners, cusps occupied by a world sphere and land/ water comparison diagram. Simple title within box across top center.
Paper and image remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal. Small scrape loss in west Africa with couple minor short manuscript fill-in of lines. Inaccurate and somewhat crude original hand color almost certainly done with stencil by unskilled domestic house-hold labor such as women or children.
Original fold lines as issued.
Sheet measures c. 8 3/8"H x 15 5/8"W.
Printed area measures c. 6 3/4"H x 13 1/4"W.
