World Eastern Hemisphere unknown Australia 1683 old Mallet map hand colorBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian
Cercles de Longitude.
(Circles of Longitude- World hemisphere- Cartography)
Issued Paris, France, 1683 for A.M. Mallet.
Interesting emphasis upon longitude. Given the long historical quest to determine it with accuracy, this map predates the discovery of a reliable global method.
Note the huge Southern continent as well as the mere partial outline of eastern Australia.
Charming late 17th century copper engraved map, with very pleasing full hand color.
The image has a near folk-art feel, a style unique to this historical era. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this reason.
Mostly clean and well preserved example, the image displays a fine patina.
Sheet measures c.8 1/4"H x 5 3/8"W.
Printed area measures c. 5 3/4"H x 4"W.
