(California as an island, Ocean floor topography, Fantasy cartography, Theoretical Models of the Earth, Topography, Mountains of the Moon)
Issued ca. 1700, Amsterdam Holland (originally issued by T. Burnet of London)
Fine and uncommon antique world map. Most noteworthy for the prominent depiction of California as an island and the huge speculative undefined Australia at loer right of top sphere. Includes a pure fantasy attempt to depict the topography of the ocean floor as well. Note the numerous mountains ranges within Africa, including Mts. of the Moon.
A picture is worth a thousand words. The photos are a major part of the item description. Please examine them closely, as what you see is what we will send you. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.].
Print remains overall clean & sound. Old prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price.
Great map entirely worthy of hanging for display.
A cartographic depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era.
Sheet measures c. 12 7/8" H x 7 3/4" W.
Printed area measures c. 10 7/8" H x 6" W
McLaughlin, Mapping of California as an Island , 77- this variant not mentioned among the four states. This version has running Dutch description across the bottom, is overlapped above Eastern Hemisphere, has "911" at top right corner and has many rhumb lines. Other minor differences appear, making it unclear if this plate is entirely newly engraved or the re-used plate reworked.
