(Old Books, Early 20th Century Books, Leather Books, Fiction, Literature, Charles Dickens, Illustrated Books, Boz).

The Works, Letters and Life of Charles Dickens, Sketches by Boz. Volume 1 (only)- with 2 original manuscript letters from Dickens tipped in long ago by original owner.
Published 1906, London by Chapman and Hall.
407 pages. Text in English. Illustrated with a profusion of plates by Cruickshank Limited to 750 sets for American & England.

The key feature of this book are the two original 19th century manuscript letters written by Charles Dickens which were tipped in long ago, likely by the binder who bound the set. Both letters are without question "correct" and authentic, both with signs of handling and folding (for mailing) prior to their being tipped in along their edges as seen here. One of the letters has the letterhead of "All the Year Round", a well known publication Dickens owned (June 1868, to Mr. Holsworth) and the other with the embossed letterhead (1867) of his country home Gad's Hill Place.

Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather binding, raised bands, gilt title lettering, marbled covers, deckled edges, top edge gilt.

Volume one (1) of a larger set, this single book only. Contents of this volume complete unto itself.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Binding exterior well age worn but still appealing, leather scuffed, FRONT COVER DETACHED, remains overall attractive as an object.

Text block paper is gently age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this book as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than they appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take numerous photos and try to describe it openly and honestly.
