Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War, by Alfred H. Guernsey and Henry M. Alden.
Published 1866-7, Chicago by Starr Publishing.
836 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with many hundreds of maps and images. Includes the often missing large pictorial hand colored map (now split into 2 halves with various tears, chips and age flaws). Detailed index at rear.

Basically an early re-issue of key Harper's weekly illustrations and text issued very soon after the end of the Civil War. Complete as issued, the entire War is covered in this volume plus some discussion of the Reconstruction period that began right after.

Attractive antiquarian 1/2 leather binding, slightly raised & gilt bands, gilt title lettering.

Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time.

Binding age worn but still appealing, leather and joints scuffed and rubbed with a slight crack to front joint due to weight of cover (which remains well attached but slightly weakened), leather still supple, this large oversize heavy book remains overall very attractive as an object.

Text block paper is gently to moderately uniformly age toned as typical, internally book remains mostly clean, tight and sound. A book which has been taken care of but may/ does not look like new.

Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in rather nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Please review photos for more detailed attempt to present this monumental book as it survives.

We often over-describe any flaws that many sellers would not even bother to mention since most people would overlook them as minor and unworthy of comment. Many people tell us the books they receive from us are nicer in person than it appears on the screen. We want you to be clear about what you are buying, so we take clear photos and try to describe it clearly.
