4 volumes, each c. 550 pages. Text in English. Contains a profusion of large detailed folding maps on bond paper. Color frontis portraits in each volume protected by original tissue guards.

Publisher's cloth bindings, gilt title lettering, embossed cover decorations.

Set is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Set is not new or in "new" condition.

Bindings gently age worn, mostly light signs of handling and time but nothing offensive or severe, book remains overall attractive as an object.

Paper is gently toned, internally still clean, tight, sound internally.

An authoritative and comprehensive essential history.

Still attractive on the shelf. The set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.
