Includes a great full page woodcut map of "The Battlefields of Antietam".

An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

The front page has two illustrations: "Flight of the Inhabitants of Sharpsburg at the Approach of Their Rebel Deliverers" and "Ford Near Shepherdstown, On the Potomac--Picket Firing Across the River".

Prints inside include a full page of: "The Battle of Antietam--First Maryland Battery in the Fore-Ground" and another full page with 3 prints: "General Kenly's Maryland Brigade Advancing to the Potomac". The significant double page centerfold has 3 prints captioned: "The Battle of Antietam, Fought Sept. 17" & "Carrying Off the Wounded After the Battle" & "Burning of Mr. Mumma's House and Barns"

Also in this issue is a full page map of: "The Battle Fields of Antietam and South Mountain"; a full page "The War in the Southwest" with 4 scenes, "The Wharf At Louisville--Inhabitants Leaving the City" "the Philadelphia Corn Exchange Regiment Fording the Potomac Near Shepherdstown" & "Shelling the Rebels on the Kentucky Banks of the Ohio River".

Also included is: "A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America" signed by him in type: Abraham Lincoln concerning the recruitment of new troops, and the suspension of Habeas corpus.

The back page has 3 political cartoons: "Lincoln's Last Warning" "The Draft" & "The Fair Thing".
