(Old Books, 18th Century Books, Leather Books, Poetry, Literature, Dr. Edward Young, The Complaint, Night Thoughts).

The Poetical Works of the Reverend Dr. Edward Young.
Published 1777, Edinburgh at the Apollo Press by the Martins for John Bell, London.
4 volumes, each c. 220 pages. Text in English. Finely engraved frontis portrait and half titles in first volume of set, an engraved half title in others.

Publisher's 18th century full calf leather with pictorial gilt stamped spines richly ornamented with symbols relating to the arts and music, titles on contrasting red morocco labels, extremities gilt ruled patterns, marbled end papers.

Books are physically old and shows some light signs of handling and time but are remarkably fresh and clean overall.

Bindings gently age worn, light or inoffensive signs of handling and time but nothing severe or unsightly, perhaps some tiny trivial scuff spots or rubbing, each book remains very attractive as an 18th century hand-made object.

Paper is gently toned, still very clean, tight, sound internally. About as well preserved and fresh as 18th century books can be, far nicer than typical (but not "new" or perfect).

Still attractive on the shelf. The books display a pleasing and unique age patina and are in overall very nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.

Originally issued as part of a monumental set, this group is complete unto itself as issued and stands alone.

Please review photos for more detail showing how this set of books survives. The asking price reflects the condition based on our examination and 35+ years full time exposure to antiquarian books, maps and printed ephemera of all types and genres. Flaws seen and/ or described have been taken into account.

Book Measures c. 5" H x 3 1/2" W.
