Geographie Universelle, by P. Buffier.
Publihed 1749, Paris by Pierre-Francois Giffart.
415 pages. Text in French. Complete with 18 maps, several engraved by Desbruslins. Extensive index at rear.
World map and Americas map both clearly depict California as an Island, although in different outline shapes. Numerous other cartographical curiosities of the era, several maps with cartouches and dated 1744.
Essentially a small pocket atlas, a charming little geographical gazetteer. The geographical information is formatted as question and answer.
Period French full mottled leather binding, raised bands, gilt compartments richly ornamented and lettered, marbled end papers.
Some cracking on joint, small area of loss to covers in spots, but binding remains clean, very tight, sound and sturdy. Interior shows some minor spotting and foxing, actually quite clean.
Folding maps all remain clean, couple with old neatly closed tears, some maps with narrow edges as issued, some edges folded under, etc. Any age flaws are easy to overlook or forgive.
A scarce and appealing little pocket atlas, complete, in the original decorative period binding and with nice age patina as a physical object.
Book measures: 6 7/8" H X 4" W.
