Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization.

An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper.  An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Includes an early submarine vignette plus a nice full page Washington, D.C. views and much more.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose, several short edge tears neatly closed with archival tape, 3" bottom centerfold split. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat.

The front page is taken up with: "The Rebel Steamer' Merrimac' Razed, and Ironclad" which would figure in the historic battle with the Monitor less than 5 months later. Also on the front page: "Henrico County Jail, Richmond, Virginia".

Other prints inside include: "The Rebel Batteries on Sewall's Point and Crany Island" which has two scenes; "The Late General E.D. Baker, Killed in Battle Oct. 21, 1861" "The Late Colonel Smith, Of the 13th Regiment N.Y.S.M." "Uniform of Colonel Geary's Artillery (General Banks's Division)" "The Army of the Potomac--Scene in Camp After Evening Parade" "The Army of the Potomac--The Picket Guard" "Provisions for the Army" includes 5 prints; "Camp of General Hunter's and General Asboth's Divisions (General Fremont's Army) at Tipton, Missouri" "War Scenes at and About Washington" has 6 scenes; "The 'Seminole' and the 'Pocahontas' Engaging the Rebel Batteries at Evansport" "Submarine Infernal Machine Intended to Destroy the 'Minnesota' " has a nice cross-section of a submarine in action.

The double page centerfold is titled: "The Great Naval Expedition" and shows many ships, plus has separate prints showing: "Shipping Horses" and "Horses in Stalls Between Decks".

The back page has two political cartoons: "A 'Smash' For Jeff" showing Jeff Davis, and: "Mr. Bull in his Big Ship 'Neutrality...".
