An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose, some short closed edge tears. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display.

The front page is taken up with prints of "General Prentis" "Brigadier-General Williams" and a scene of: "Departure of General Lyon & His Command from Boonville, Missouri, for the Arkansas Border."

Other prints inside include: "The Battle of Rich Mountain" & another full page of "Wilson's Zouaves in the Ditch & Covered Way on the Land Front of Fort Pickens". A displayable full page includes 4 vignettes headed: "Fourth of July at Camp Hamilton Near Fortress Monroe (see). A half page shows "Louisiana Zouave Prisoners in the Guard House at Fortress Monroe" and a smaller print: "Infernal Machine Picked up on the Potomac by the U.S. Steamer 'Pawnee' ".

The double page centerfold titled Yankee Doodle is a montage of scenes from "Stony Point" from the Revolutionary War. A full page has 9 scenes of: "Camp Life with General Williams" and half page prints of: "Battle of Hoke's Run--Col. Starkweather with his Wisconsin Regiment Deploying as Skirmishers" and "Lieutenant Hall's Compliments to the Secessionists".

A terrific full page shows a "Balloon View of Washington, D. C." showing the Capitol dome only partially completed. 

Also a full page of a "Review of the New York Troops at Washington by General Sandford, in Presence of the President & Cabinet" which shows Abraham Lincoln, and another print: "Arrival of Horses at Washington For The Army".

Most of the back page is taken up with various cartoonish prints relating to the Civil War, in additional to another on an inside p[age captioned; "Fancy Sketch of Right Reverend Major-General Bishop Polk Heading His 'Division' ".
