An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events.

Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

The Homer double page centerfold has a short closed tear from the bottom edge

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

The full front page is a print of: "Major-General Hooker, Commanding the Army of the Potomac". .But perhaps the most notable print is the nice double page centerfold done by noted artist Winslow Homer: "Pay Day in the Army of the Potomac".

Other prints within include a half pg: "Our Colored Troops--Line Officers of the First Louisiana Native guards" and another: "Our Colored Troops At Work--The First Louisiana Native Guards disembarking at Fort Macombe, Louisiana". Also a full page: "The Federal Ram 'Queen of the West' Attacking the Rebel gunboat 'Vicksburg' Off Vicksburg."; a full page with 2 prints: "Skinner's Neck, on the Rappahannock, Below Fredericksburg, Virginia" & "Cobbin's Neck, on the Rappahannock"; and a full page: "Map of the Southern States Showing the Relative Proportion of Slaves in the Different Localities."

The back page has a political cartoon: "The Copperhead Party."
