De la Ville de Dunkercke ave Toutes Explications des Places & Ouevrages de dehors en Nombre de Zyffres

(France- Atlantic Ocean coast- Military battle map- militia- armies- naval ships).

Issued ca. 1612-30, likely Holland
(the distance key at lower right of map gives the distance from Brabant.)

"R.C."- del. et f(ecit)- [engravers initials are "R.C."]

Rare and unusual early 17th century battle map of Dunkirk, seemingly separately issued as a broadside.

Comprised on two sheets attached long ago, as issued (?). Appears to be a broadside.

Below the detailed battle map are two extensive numbered keys (29 locations identified in each), left one in Dutch, right in French.

Map shows signs of age, handling, some browning and wear along the fold-lines, wrinkling, extraneous folds, top margin shaved into ships area. An early paper repair on the back as well, top blank margin trimmed away. An enigmatic item, almost certainly very rare.

A depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era. Interesting and enigmatic survival.

Sheet measures c.  16 1/8" H x  11 1/8" W.

Printed area measures c. 9 5/8" H x  10 1/2" W

Very old fold lines.
