Johnson's Africa.

(Africa, Continent, Liberia, The Nile, Cape Colony, Egypt, Morocco, Guinea, Sahara Desert).

Issued New York, 1870 by A.J. Johnson. Scarce late version of this map more frequently encountered in earlier states & issues. Imprint reads 1864, border and imprint reveals later state.

Lovely antique engraved and lithographed map with original hand color. There are numerous variant issues of this map with shifting interior features and details.

Large insets across top include Liberia with many early printed dates for plots, Nile Delta and Cape Colony of South Africa. Insets above title of Cape Verde Islands and St. Helena.

Equator line with engraved note above it "Probable Direction of a Great Mountain Chain", evidently the last vestiges of the mythical Mts. of the Moon range once located in precisely the area around this. Interior still mostly blank and devoid of detail, includes a supposed Great Lake, likely associated with the unknown Mt./ chain.

In attractive well preserved condition; slight inoffensive old soft crease across bottom right portion, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, some faint minor foxing in the blank margins, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive.

Original fold line as issued.

Sheet measures c. 26" x 18"

Engraved area measures c. 22 1/2" x 16"
