Map of the Seat of War in Eastern Virginia, from Fortress Monroe to Richmond.

(North America, United States, Virginia, Confederacy, Civil War, Fortress Monroe, Richmond, Petersburg, Appomattox, Peninsular Campaign, Hampton Roads).

Issued 1862, New York by Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper.

Lovely 19th century wood engraved map with lovely subtle and appropriate looking hand color.

A scarce large wood cut map issued within a popular illustrated weekly newspaper of the day. Leslie's was a direct competitor to Harper's Weekly newspaper, but had smaller circulation and thus far fewer of their issues or loose images survive today versus Harpers. This example almost certainly among the finest which could be acquired for this scarce Civil War newspaper map.

A superior visual example, perfect for display or gifting. Found here with paper uniformly gently age toned; also beautifully hand colored in mellow hues which greatly enhance the appearance of the woodcut map.

Very nice looking example, pleasing age patina,

Some old staining visible in blank margin edges and corners, two thin pieces of linen tape still affixed at top edge of sheet, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.

Original fold line as issued. Text on reverse. Scarce as found here.

Sheet Measures c. 16" H x 21 3/4" W.

Engraved Area Measures c. 14" H x 20" W.
