Sahara Desert Northern Africa natives w/ elephants 1719 Mallet antique map
$ 85.00

Zaara le Desert

(Sahara Desert, Northern Africa, etc.)

Issued 1719, Frankfort, Germany for A.M. Mallet.

Large vignette scene across bottom features two elephants with natives on their backs holding a title banner between them which greatly enhances the visual appeal.

Charming early 18th century copper engraved map, with pleasing full hand color.  Very few examples are encountered with such nice detailed coloring.

The image has a near folk-art feel, a style of cartographic image quite unique to this time in history. Utterly unlike anything produced today and of modern aesthetic appeal for this very reason. Also, the small size lends a feeling of intimacy, like a small near miniature jewel.

Print paper and engraved area remains well preserved. Some light age wear or surface spotting/ soiling which is visible within the scan, nothing offensive or severe, overall remains visually attractive and historically interesting.

Charming little old antique map, entirely worthy of display, resale, gift-giving, etc.

Sheet measures c. 5 3/4" W x 7 3/4" H.

Printed area measures c. 4" W x 5 1/2" H.

Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous minor thin creases or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value.
