(Central America / Galapagos Islands / Nicaragua / Isthmus of Panama / Society Islands)

Issued Hildburghausen, Germany c. 1850-52 by Meyer.

Fascinating small mid-19th century German geology themed map. Engraved with original outline hand-color.

Focus is volcanoes, mountain heights, and their geological relationship to island formations.

Shows the influence of Alexander Humboldt on German scientific mapping at this early moment of dissemination of his observations and theories.

Sandwich islands (Hawaii) inset bottom left includes a related tiny mountain profile picto-comparison of named peaks there versus those of the Society Islands. A map you could use a magnifying glass on- various engraved & dated notes, interior topographical details, place names, micro symbols linked to a key, etc.

Inset maps include Tehuantepec, the Galapagos Islands, Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), Society Islands, Friendly Islands, Panama, and Nicaragua. Longitude given from Paris.

Sheet is gently uniformly age toned with some light trivial spotting (mostly to margins), perhaps small minor paper edge flaws, but to our eyes and for most people, an entirely acceptable and nice looking example of this antique map.

Sheet measures c. 12" x 9 3/4".

Engraved area measures c. 9 3/4" x 7 1/4".
